EARLY ITALIAN FIGURE OF A SANTO

Probably dating to the early 19th Century if not a little earlier, this carved wood and papier mache period santos was once in the famous collection of Pietro Vitali.
The polychromed model is in full length, standing on a turned wooden base.
As with most of these early religious figures it shows a wonderfully worn condition and patina – relished by fashion conscious interior designers – as per the accompanying photos.
The back of the head has damage and you can see the original filling made of twine and plaster.
A highly decorative piece and a genuine Italian antique.
