PORTRAIT OF A FRENCH LADY

A large Mid 19th Century oil portrait of a French lady sitting in a fauteuil Voltaire, wearing a large early Victorian mourning ‘knot’ brooch and a simple gold and coral wedding ring.
Very much in attic condition, with paint flaking, tears and some loosening of the canvas at the bottom of the stretcher, the painting is past restoration and must be enjoyed and admired as it is, as indeed its very condition is what makes it an ethereal and ghostly portrait of considerable presence.
