A RARE GEORGIAN SAMPLER
A very unusual George III “batwing” sampler, by Jean Caw, of Scottish interest, worked in coloured threads with the Scott’s Arms, the English Arms, the Tower of London, Edinburgh castle and Sterling Castle, interspersed with stylised birds and flowers.
Mounted on board, but will need to be framed to protect it due to its fragility.
A rare and endearing item of the Georgian period. Circa 1780-90
condition is fair and there is fading consistent with age. The canvas is rather brittle. There are signs of historic worm attack to the left edge of the board, now extinct.
